THE ROLLING STONES SONG OF THE DAY–CRY TO ME

Julian Wasser Black and White Photograph - The Rolling Stones, 1965

The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is Cry To Me. Cry To Me was written by Bert Russell- better known as Bert Berns. The song was written for the great soul singer Solomon Burke and in 1962 was released as a single- going to #5 on the R&B chart and #44 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This is the second Bert Berns song that The Stones had covered the first was “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love.” Right on the backs of The Stones covering this song- the Pretty Things id- and reached #28 in the UK with the single. The Rolling Stones version of Cry To Me doesn’t sound much like Burke’s- Mick’s vocals are a highlight and The Stones version is a slowed down version in comparison to Burke’s. This song wouldn’t be something that The Stones would hold on to- the last time they performed the song was in October 1965.  Cry To Me is on The Rolling Stones- Out Of Our Heads album.
