The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is Under The Boardwalk. Under The Boardwalk appears on The Rolling Stones No. 2 album. It was written by Arthur Resnick and Kenny Young. It was song was originally a hit song for The Drifters in 1964- going all the way to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The Rolling Stones recorded the song just two months after The Drifters did. The song has since been covered by a number of artists-from The Beach Boys to John Mellencamp. The Rolling Stones do a creditable job with the song- taking on a song that was just a popular hit is a challenge and The Drifters version is of course the ‘go to’ version of the song but The Stones carry their own here.

  1. If I recall it correctly, it was The Rolling Stones’ version that introduced me to the song – great tune!

I also think John Mellencamp’s remake you noted is fantastic. He included it on his 16th studio album Rough Harvest from August 1999, which features rootsy versions of original tunes and some covers.

I’ve really come to dig this record big time and now think it’s one of the gems of his long catalog. Hope you don’t mind my enthusiasm and that I’m including a link to a clip of Mellencamp’s take of the song! 🙂
