At the middle point in 1968 the 9th #1 song of the year- was This Guy’s In Love With You- by Herb Alpert. It would hold the #1 slot for four weeks. This Guy’s In Love With You was written by the famous team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Herb Alpert was known mainly for playing the trumpet with his group Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass- they had a slew of hit singles and albums but this would be Alpert’s first #1- he would have a second in 1979 with the instrumental “Rise.” He is in fact the only recording artist who had a #1 vocal and #1 instrumental song. There is some trivia to tell your friends. I have always found this song painful to listen to he was better as an instrumentalist but this went to #1 so who am I to argue with success? This song has been covered by a number of artists over the years- and it was just a Bacharach- David throwaway until Alpert asked Bacharach if he had any old compositions lying around that they hadn’t used.
