The 7th #1 song of 1968 was Tighten Up by Archie Bell and The Drells. Of the sixteen songs to hit #1 in 1968 this would be the song that I have heard the least amount of times without question. Archie Bell and The Drells were an R&B group from Houston, Texas. Tighten Up was their first hit and their biggest. They would go on to have three Top 40 hit in their career. It is considered as one of the first funk hits.

Soon after recording the song Archie Bell was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Vietnam. The song then took off and quickly rose to #1.

Archie Bell’s brother Ricky Bell a decade later would be an All-American running back at USC and the #1 pick in the 1977 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Bucs.

  1. Too bad you didn’t grow up where I did. You would have definitely heard this song a lot! I still remember the lyrics. There was a dance named after it that we loved and were almost required to know how to do.

  2. This is an irresistible dance song. As a Texan I know it well. Didn’t know that about his brother Ricky Bell. I love the shout out in the intro, “…This is Archie Bell and the Drells and were from Houston, Texas where we dance just as good as we walk…” or something like that.
