It was fifty years ago today- August 24, 1968- The Beatles made their first record releases on their Apple label- among those releases were one of their great singles “Hey Jude”with the b-side of the excellent “Revolution”- not that slower version which would be released in November on The White Album but the fast rocking version.  Hey Jude would become the most successful Beatles single in the United States- chart wise- holding down the #1 spot in the Billboard charts for 9 weeks which was a record at the time. The song was at 7:11 the longest #1 single up to that point in the history of the UK chart. Not only was the song a great success it was a great song. {There have been countless songs that were great chart successes that sucked for air- Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life”comes to mind- it was 10 weeks at #1 in 1977 and it ranked. }

Paul was inspired to write this after going out to visit Cynthia Lennon and the Lennon’s young son Julian- after John had left them for Yoko Ono. He wrote the song to comfort Julian for the stress he would suffer with his parents breaking up. John always felt that the song was directed to him- that Paul was giving him the “OK” for his relationship with Miss Ono. I tend to believe Paul’s version of why he wrote the song.

Another notable release this day on Apple- was a previously unknown singer- Mary Hopkin single “Those Were The Days”- produced by Paul McCartney that would go to #1 in the UK- and just miss the top spot in the US #2.

The 3rd Apple release on this day would be the Jackie Lomax single “Sour Milk Sea” a song written by George Harrison during The Beatles time in India. The single made little impression on the charts. The fourth single was by the John Foster and Sons Ltd Black Dyke Mills Band- Thingumybob/ Yellow Submarine- both instrumentals.
