The Beatles Song of the Day is Yer Blues. Yer Blues is on side 3 of The Beatles White Album and is clearly a John Lennon song.  John’s comment on the song was that he wrote it while in India- trying to reach God and feeling suicidal. How serious was John? Was this a cry for help or satirical or a combination of both? Written in India- he was without Yoko. 1968 wasn’t a great year for John personally-his life was in turmoil. He was going to be leaving his wife- for Yoko. He wasn’t happy at the time being a Beatle. In the song he mentioned feeling suicidal like the character Mr Jones in Dylan’s  “Ballad of A Thin Man’ As far as the title- John went against Paul’s advice and called it “Yer Blues” instead of “Your Blues.” This is one Beatles song of John’s that would have fit in well on Plastic Ono Band- his first solo album. In late 1968 John appeared as part of a super group that included Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell at The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus- the only Beatles song he performed was Yer Blues. It was also his first concert experience since The Beatles last concert in August 1966. John Lennon: vocal, backing vocal, lead guitar: Paul McCartney: bass: George Harrison: lead guitar: Ringo Starr: drums. Produced by George Martin.

YER BLUES

Yes, I’m lonely
Want to die
Yes, I’m lonely
Want to die
If I ain’t dead already
Oh, girl, you know the reason why
In the morning
Want to die
In the evening
Want to die
If I ain’t dead already
Oh, girl, you know the reason why
My mother was of the sky
My father was of the earth
But I am of the universe
And you know what it’s worth
I’m lonely
Want to die
If I ain’t dead already
Oh, girl, you know the reason why
The eagle picks my eye
The worm he licks my bone
I feel so suicidal
Just like Dylan’s Mr. Jones
Lonely
Want to die
If I ain’t dead already
Oh, girl, you know the reason why
Black cloud crossed my mind
Blue mist round my soul
Feel so suicidal
Even hate my rock and roll
Want to die
Yeah, want to die
If I ain’t dead already
Oh, girl, you know the reason why
