The Beatles Song Of The Day: “It’s Only Love”

The Beatles Song Of The Day is “It’s Only Love” which is on The Beatles “Help!” album. “It’s Only Love” was written by John Lennon. It was one of The Beatles songs he wrote that he hated the most. The lyrics are pretty weak but I’ve always liked the sound of the song myself. John Lennon: double-tracked vocal and acoustic rhythm guitar/ Paul McCartney: bass guitar/ George Harrison: lead guitar/ Ringo Starr: drums and tambourine. The song was recorded on June 15th, 1965 at Abbey Road. Producer: George Martin.

Rating “It’s Only Love” on a scale of 1 to 5 stars ****

  1. I’ve also always liked this tune for the music!

While I understand John’s sentiments, you could say the same thing for songs like “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, “She Loves You” and other earlier Beatles tunes – terrific music and “light” lyrics.

Frankly, I never had a problem with “light” lyrics during the first half of their recording career. Their terrific music and singing more than made up for it! Plus, one shouldn’t forget how young (and to some extent innocent) The Beatles were when they became famous.

I would say “Revolver” is probably their first album when the lyrics started to become more meaningful – yet another reason why it’s such an important record in their history!

    • I wonder what John would have said about some of the things he trashed– if he had lived longer. He was very critical at times about The Beatles- he tended to have no filter. I think had he lived he would have changed his tune on a lot of his earlier statements. When The Beatles ended they were all under thirty years old! George was like 26. That is incredible what they accomplished at such young ages. I don’t think they were human.

    • While I don’t believe The Beatles were part of some extraterrestrial species, I completely agree with you that their artistic output was incredible.😀

What’s even more amazing to me is that so many people still love their music to this day!

  2. I’ve always liked the sound and the intro. This album to me started the change into more mature Beatles…so to speak…
John was critical of older songs. And Your Bird Can Sing…he called a horror and throwaway?… I do think he would have changed a bit as he got older.
