James Monroe- the 5th President of the United States died on July 4, 1831 in New York City. He is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Three of the first five POTUS died on July 4. On July 4th, 1826 the second and third POTUS died on the same day- John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond is a must-see. I have been there a half dozen times over the years and you can easily spend hours wondering around. Two US Presidents are buried there- Monroe and John Tyler, the Confederacy’s president Jefferson Davis and his wife, 28 Confederate generals including J.E.B. Stuart, Powell Hill and George Pickett are also. It is a beautiful cemetery.
James Monroe served two terms as POTUS- he is the last president who ran unopposed for re-election. Not one of our most exciting presidents but his period as president was a rather calm period- after the War of 1812. He was POTUS after James Madison and before John Quincy Adams. He was 73 at his time of death.
