GUNS ‘N ROSES DEBUT ALBUM “APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION” RELEASED JULY 21, 1987

Thirty years ago today Guns “N Roses released there debut album “Appetite For Destruction.” It would not only go to #1 on the Billboard album charts but also go on to become the best selling debut album ever in the United States,. Worldwide the album has sold 30 million copies.

There were three Top 10 singles on this album- Welcome To The Jungle went to #7, Sweet Child O’ Mine- [my favorite song on the album} hit #1 and Paradise City peaked at #5. There were a dozen songs on the album and it clocked in at just under 54 minutes.

“Appetite For Destruction” has to be listed on the shortlist of greatest debut albums of all times- but to me anyhow it falls short of The Clash “The Clash”, The Ramones “The Ramones”, The Band “Music From Big Pink”, Jimi Hendrix Experience “Are You Experienced?”, Elvis Costello “My Aim Is True”, The Beatles “Please Please Me” and The Sex Pistols “Never Mind The Bollocks.” Rolling Stone magazine a few years ago named the Beastie Boys “Licensed To Ill” the greatest debut album ever-I don’t agree with that call.

Back to Guns ‘N Roses- from the get go you just had a feeling we weren’t talking about a group that was going to stay together very long and they didn’t.

  1. I actually love the album because it was a vast difference to some of the horrible hair metal that was coming over to the U.K. from the States at the time of release. “Licensed To Ill” ???? What were they thinking?
