One thing that President Barack Obama and I agree on is Omar Little and The Wire. As a candidate for POTUS in January 2008- Barack Obama commented that his favorite television show was The Wire and that his favorite character was Omar Little. The same is true for me. I am currently watching The Wire’s five seasons for the 4th time. The Wire is my all time favorite show and Omar is my all time favorite character on any television show.
In a television show with many well drawn out characters- Omar was to me the most fascinating. We find out right away that Omar is homosexual. He wasn’t a good guy- he was a stick up man who liked to rob street level drug dealers. He would walk around with a shot gun hidden under his duster. He was great at laying low and being hard to find. He would walk down the streets whispering “Farmer In The Dell.” The sight of Omar would send everyone running and yelling “Omar’s comin’. Omar’s code is he isn’t going to hurt innocent people who are not a part of ‘the game.” He also refuses to use profanity. He is shown taking his grandmother to church. Omar pretty much says what he means and mean what he says. He’s intelligent and his plans are well crafted and carried out. He outsmarts his opponents- and is great at laying low. They talk of him as kind of an urban legend at times. He strikes and disappears. Does he really exist? Where does he stay? He’s hard to find. Michael K. Williams the actor who plays Omar- steals every scene he is in.
I bought this t-shirt over the internet a year or so ago. I was disappointed on a couple trips to Baltimore not being able to find any t-shirts on The Wire. I know the show ended a decade ago but come on- it’s The Wire.
