On this day in 1976 The Beatles “Rock “N’ Roll Music” double album compilation was released. The album featured all previously released material but would still go to #2 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The Beatles themselves were not happy with the album cover which looked cheap and the inside gatefold which had nothing to do with The Beatles or the 1960’s. a 1957 Chevrolet, a Coca-Cola, a jukebox and Marilyn Monroe which was all 1950’s. The executives at Capital were tying to cash in on the 1950s nostalgia that was going on at the moment. The music inside on the two albums was a collection of The Beatles more rocking songs- 28 in all.
I wouldn’t have made this post except for one thing- this was the first Beatles album I ever owned. In the fall of 1976 I became friends with Andy- who turned me on The Beatles. This was the album that was out at the time so I went out and bought it- Rock “N’ Roll Music was my gateway drug. I quickly advanced to the Red and Blue double album best of’s that were released in 1973 and before you know it I had advanced to even harder drugs- the actual Beatles albums themselves. Of course at this time- the mid-1970’s the albums I was buying were the American releases not the superior British releases that would later be released in the U.S.
I should get this album out. I haven’t listened to it in a couple decades at least. No real reason to listen to it the songs are on other albums that I regularly play. This album has never been released on CD to my knowledge. It is important to me though for that simple fact- it was my first Beatles album, I loved what I heard and The Beatles became an obsession that has been going on now for 40 plus years.
