THE SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER OF ALL-TIME- ‘STAR WARS’ RELEASED THIS DAY IN 1977

It was forty years ago today- “Star Wars” was released. Talk about a summer blockbuster. This movie dominated the summer of 1977 with people who saw it going back for multiple showings. They just couldn’t get enough of it. This film only cost $11 million dollars to make and brought in $775.400, 000. Directed and written by George Lucas. The stars of the movie Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher weren’t big stars at the time of the making of the first Star Wars. Harrison Ford of course would go on to be in many huge money making movies when you consider the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.

Confession- I wasn’t one of the Star Wars movie goers that summer. I never saw the movie until years later on HBO. I did see the first three movies in the theaters back around the turn of the decade when they were briefly re-released. I am thinking it was three weeks in a row at midnight. The original three movies I really liked. I went to the new ones in the early part of the decade, didn’t care for them and gave up on the series. My favorite Star Wars character? Slam dunk- Darth Vader.
