The Appalachian Trail is about 2200 miles long. Depending on how fast you hike- it takes generally 5 to 6 months to complete. I have never walked the trail and I probably never will but It would be an awesome experience to do so. The Thru-Hikers who are doing the entire trail generally start at Springer Mountain, Georgia in the spring and end up at Mount Katahdin, Maine in the early fall. In 2014, 2700 people walked the entire trail. Their are those who go from one end to the other and turn around and walk back to where they began- this is called the ‘yo-yo.’
There is only 4 miles of the Appalachian Trail in West Virginia but it is the place where the Appalachian Trail Conservatory is located. This is what most consider the mental half-way point on the trail. We go to Harpers Ferry a few times a year we always stop at the A.P Conservatory. All kinds of info on the trail there. We always look for the new t-shirts they have to buy. A lot of hikers use this as a place to get their mail and supplies forwarded to. The people working their are always very friendly and helpful and you always see walkers stopping in. The t-shirt above is one I got from there a few years ago. We were in Harpers Ferry over the weekend and stopped but didn’t see any t-shirt that got my attention. We had last been there in October and I picked up a nice one then though.
