WYEP in Pittsburgh recently came up with what according to them are the 20 worst songs ever- looking at the list I can’t disagree with most of their choices. I will defend Paul McCartney-while I don’t think “Silly Love Songs” is one of his masterpieces it is far from being one of the 20 worst songs ever. I love lists and just a couple weeks ago my sister-in-law and I had a discussion on what the worst song ever was- some of these songs were listed. My personal choice- “Afternoon Delight” by Starland Vocal Band.. the clincher was- this hit if I recall correctly resulted in their getting a summer replacement show on network television back in the mid 70’s. Then they faded into oblivion.

  1. I can’t argue with “Love Hurts” being pretty bad also. One of those songs you need to hear only once in your life. I was reading up a little bit in the past hour on The Starland Vocal Band– one of its members -who wrote that awful song- was a co-writer of John Denver’s famous hit “Country Roads.” I hadn’t known that.

  2. Most of the songs on their list were merely medeiocre. There have been some real stinkers that were not mentioned. “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” comes to mind. James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” is another. plus much of the Christmas catalogue “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” is horrid, My least favorite song of all time is Berle Ives’ “Have A Holly Jolly Christmas”

  3. I think they kind of went for a lot of songs that have been mentioned over the years as being awful.. I think one qualification would have to be -the song had to be a big hit. Some song that barely scratched the top 40- wouldn’t get enough play to truly get under your skin. They could have dug a little deeper. Not enough songs from the past two decades.

  4. Very biased list . Why is disco and country not adequately represented? McCarthur Park has been used as a great jazz standard for many years. Sussudio was not a poor song.

    • I think whoever made the list was lazy- a lot of these songs have been listed for decades. Agree on McArthur Park- written by the great Jimmy Webb.
