MY LIFE THROUGH MY T-SHIRT COLLECTION- #21 THE GREAT ONE-ROBERTO CLEMENTE

IMG_1021

The latest addition to my t-shirt collection- bought this two weeks ago when I went to the Reds- Pirates game at PNC Park.

Roberto Clemente remains the most exciting baseball player I’ve ever seen. He was a great player with who had a lot of flair about him. I have always said that if you didn’t know anything about baseball and went to a game and Clemente was playing in it you would know there was something special about him by just watching him warm up. Just his movements drew your attention. As a young fan going to games at Forbes Field I would spend a lot of time with my eyes glued on “The Great One.” He had the strongest and most accurate throwing arm I’ve seen from right field. Vin Scully once said that “Clemente could field a ball in New York and throw out a guy in Pennsylvania.”

Roberto played in two World Series- a total of 14 games, he had at least one hit in every one of those games. 1971 was his showcase. He carried the Pirates on his back in that series vs the Baltimore Orioles with his outstanding play. The baseball world finally saw what everyone in Pittsburgh had known for years, that Clemente was one of the greats.

”Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth.” -Roberto Clemente
