The Detroit Red Wings had the longest currently running streak of making the playoffs of any American sports team at 25 seasons. With a loss last night they have been eliminated from this years playoffs. The streak ends at 25. During that stretch the Detroit Red Wings have won four Stanley Cups. The longest run in NHL history was the Boston Bruins from 1967-68 season and ended when they failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 1996-97 season.
Note- On the same night that the Detroit Red Wings success streak ended the Edmonton Oilers failure streak ended- they had gone ten seasons without making the playoffs the longest consecutive streak in the wrong direction- the Oilers have clinched a spot in this years upcoming playoffs and look to be finally going in the right direction.
