Former Major League Baseball Star Bobby Bonilla turns 54 today. For a couple years in the early 1990’s Bonilla, a very good but not great player was the highest paid player in the game earning more than $6 million dollars a year. Why I am writing about Bonilla today is because of the great deal he made at the end of his contract.
When the New York Mets released Bonilla in 2000 they still owed him 5.9 million for the final year of his contract. Instead of just paying him off a deal was negotiated where Bonilla would receive $1.19 million each year until 2035. By the time the deal expires Bonilla will have been paid $ 29.8 million for that one season that he didn’t play for the Mets.
