On this day in 1967- 50 years ago today the Twenty-Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted. The 25th Amendment is the one that deals with the succession to the Presidency and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, as well as responding to Presidential disabilities, {Woodrow Wilson being a prime example.}

Up until this time there was no working in the U.S. Constitution as to whether the Vice President becomes President or Acting President if the President dies, resigns, removed from office or incapacitated and cannot discharge the powers of the presidency.

Eight Presidents had died in office before 1967, four due to assassination and four due to illness. Since the passing of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, POTUS Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 but thankfully no presidents have died since JFK.
