On this day in 1922, on his 40th name day- the Irish novelist’s modernist novel Ulysses was first published in book form. Ulysses was first serialized in The Little Review and American journal from March 1918 until December 1920. The highly controversial book was published on this date 95 years ago by Sylvia Beach in Paris. It took James Joyce from 1914-1921 to write the book.
The book follows the adventures and encounters of one Leopold Bloom through a day in Dublin- on June 16th, 1904- a day in which Joyce fans celebrate as Bloomsday.
An outstanding recent book on Ulysses and its many controversies-The Most Dangerous Book: The Battle for James Joyce’s Ulysses- by Kevin Birmingham.
