Frank Gifford’s Call of Franz Klammer’s 1976 Downhill Gold Medal Run

Frank Gifford who passed away yesterday at the age of 84 was known most as a Hall of Fame football player and the play-by-play man on Monday Night Football. He also called other sports. One of the most exciting sports events I have ever witnessed was Franz Klammer’s 1976 Winter Olympic run for the gold in the downhill. The Olympic Games were in Innsbruck, Austria and there was tremendous pressure on Klammer to win the gold medal. He was on the edge the entire trip down the hill, several times he looked like he was out of control and going to wreck. He didn’t and he won the gold medal. Frank Gifford called this event and he nailed it.

I am not a skiing fan. I watch it every four years at the Olympics but Klammer’s run is on my Mount Rushmore of Most Exciting Events I have seen in nearly 50 years of watching sports. 1- 1980 USA vs USSR Olympic Hockey Game. 2-The Thrilla In Manila- Ali V Frazier III  3. Game 6 of the 1975 World Series Reds v. Red Sox  4. Franz Klammer’s 1976 Olympic Downhill.
