70th anniversary of the Great Escape

The Great Escape is a fantastic read. Written by Paul Brickhill, it was made into a movie in 1963, and starred Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, Charles Bronson, and David McCallum (currently starring as Dr. Donald Mallard on NCIS) among others. The movie was of course hollywoodized and americanized to sell here in the states, but the real men of the Great Escape were aviators of the RAF. An outstanding movie nonetheless, but the real story is better than anything hollywood could dream up.

of the 76 that escaped that night – three found their way to freedom back to the allied side. 50 were rounded up and executed by the Nazi’s. today only 2 of the men that participated in the escape are still alive. linked below is an article on one of them.
