Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Dock Ellis Pitches A No-Hitter While On LSD- This Day 1970

On this day in 1970 Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres in San Diego while on LSD. Dock Ellis was one of the most colorful players in an era full of colorful players. He was kind of out of place in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh wasn’t ready for Dock Ellis. When the Pirates traded Ellis to the Yankees in the mid-70’s most Pirate fans were happy. I always liked Dock myself. I do not know if he got the most out of his talent though. Needless to say, I’d have to wager Dock Ellis is in only pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter under the influence of LSD.

Below is a great and lengthy story on Dock Ellis from ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” which appeared last year.
