Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy was assassinated on this day in 1968, on the evening of the California Primary. My personal memory of the assassination is- It was the last day of first grade. I got on the bus and heard that Bobby Kennedy had been shot late the night before and was not expected to live. 1968 sucked.
Attached is a clip from the coverage of ABC News of that evening
This was a heartbreaking day for me as well. Three influential figures lost – RFK, MLK and JFK – within 5 years. Devastating. What could we have achieved if this had not happened?
Oh, I will never forget that day. I was about 8 years old, and I woke up because my mother was moaning and crying in the next room. I ran in and heard her yelling into the phone, “You’re lying! You’re lying! Why would you call me and tell me a terrible lie like that?”
She hung up the phone and switched on the little TV in her room, and we watched the coverage.
It took the friend who called her with the news a long to time forgive her for accusing her of lying, but my mom said she just couldn’t believe it happening so soon after Dr. King’s assassination.
I was about your age then- I was 7.. I can’t imagine going through times like that again..
