Hockey Legends Gordie Howe Retires- At Age 52-This Day 1980

On this day in 1980 the remarkable Gordie Howe retired from hockey. He was 52 years old. He retired as the all time leader in goals, assists, points and games played. He played 32 seasons and finished with 801 goals. He still has to be considered one of the greatest players ever. He played so long that in his final years he played on the same team with his sons Mark and Marty. I was lucky enough to see him play in his final season. He was a great all-around player. He wasn’t one of those goal scorers who needed protection. Gordie Howe was his own muscle. I doubt we ever see another hockey player play that long! At age 52 he still scored 15 goals in the NHL. Mr. Hockey is now 85!
