John Bonham the greatest drummer in rock and roll history was born on this day in 1948. John Bonham was the drummer for Led Zeppelin. Nicknamed “Bonzo” Bonham’s drumming was essential as essential to the Led Zeppelin sound as Jimmy Page’s guitar or Robert Plant’s vocals. When Bonham died in 1980 of alcohol abuse [he had taken 40 shots of vodka in the last 24 hours of his life} Led Zeppelin knew better than to carry on, they wisely called it quits.
Bonham was famous for his hard hitting on the drums. He used the longest and heaviest sticks available, he called them ‘trees.” That hard hitting style would be heard on many of Led Zeppelin’s greatest songs.
When they talk about great losses in rock music history Bonham’s has to rank up there, his death ended the career of one of rock’s greatest bands.
