The United States Library of Congress was established on this day in 1800 when President John Adams signed legislation to appropriate $5000 to purchase ‘such books as necessary for the use of Congress.” Today there are over 22,700,000 books in the Library of Congress. All total there are over 151,000,000 items in the Library of Congress. Money well spent.
