Warren Spahn was born on this day in 1921. Warren Spahn won more games than any other left-handed pitcher in baseball history. His career record was 363-245. Warren Spahn won 20 or more games in 13 seasons. When he was 42 years old he won 23 and lost 7. Spahn didn’t throw his first no-hitter until he was 39 years old in 1960, the following year he threw his second no-hitter. Warren Spahn played most of his career with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves, he finished up with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants.
On July 2,1963 at the age of 42 Spahn pitching for the Braves faced the great Juan Marichal in an incredible pitchers duel. The game went 16 innings and Spahn gave up a solo home run to Willie Mays in the bottom of the 16th and the Giants won 1-0. In the game Marichal who pitched the entire game threw 221 pitches and Spahn threw 201. Today both pitchers would probably have been taken out by the 7th inning.
Warren Spahn was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. Spahn died at the age of 82 in 2003.
