Eldrick “Tiger” Woods Wins His First Major -This Day 1997

On this day in 1997 Eldrick “Tiger” Woods won his first major in winning The Masters. He was 21 years old. He shot an incredible -18 for the tournament and won by 12 strokes. Eldrick has won 4 Masters Tournaments, the last coming in 2005.

Today Eldrick is 37 years old. He has 14 Majors to his name. His obsession has always been Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 Majors. Eldrick hasn’t won a Major though since the U.S. Open in 2008. This season he has won 3 tournaments and today, halfway through The Masters he is in the hunt. My thinking is if he doesn’t win at least one Major this year he can forget about catching Jack.He doesn’t win this weekend and its going to start to get into his head. I can win all they mickey mouse tournaments but what is wrong in the Majors? I don’t think he will catch Jack anyway. One record he should catch is the record of PGA wins held by Slammin’ Sam Snead. Snead has 82 all-time wins, Eldrick is second with 77. Eldrick will catch Sam this year or next. I am rooting for Eldrick to win all the non-majors he enters but to never win another Major.

Eldrick is one of the greatest golfers of all-time but he isn’t the greatest. If they were going to have a Major to decide the greatest golfer ever in Golf Valhalla- my money would be on Ben Hogan to win that tournament.
