“Papa Bear” George Halas Born This Day 1895

“Papa Bear” George Halas was born on this day in 1895. George Halas was one of the founders of the National Football League and one of its greatest all-time coaches. George Halas was the Chicago Bears. His Bears won eight NFL Championships, most of them being in the 1930’s and 1940’s. His regular season coaching record was 318-148-31. He was the winningest coach in league history until Don Shula broke the record. His time in the league spanned from 1920 until his death in 1983 at at the age of 88. He retired as a coach after the 1967 season.

His daughter Virginia McCaskey along with her children and grandchildren own 80% of the Bears today. Virginia McCaskey is now 90.
