On this day in 1892 Ellis Island opened to begin processing immigrants into the United States. On the first day three large ships with 700 immigrants passed over the docks. The first immigrant to pass through was Annie Moore a 15 year old from Cork, Ireland She recieved a greeting from officials and a $10 gold piece. The first year 450,000 immigrants arrived.
