Singer-Songwriter John Denver Born This Day 1943

Singer-songwriter John Denver was born on this day in 1943. He was born Henry John Deutschenforf Jr.  During his career John Denver recorded 30 studio albums and had 14 Top 40 singles on the Billboard Pop Charts during his career. Four of his songs went to #1- “Sunshine On My Shoulders” , “Annie’s Song”,Thank God I’m A Country Boy” and “I’m Sorry” His first hit song was “Take Me Home Country Roads” which reached #2 and is my personal favourite John Denver song. He was at the peak of his popularity in the 1970’s. I am not a huge John Denver fan but I do have the two disc- “The Essential John Denver” which I would recommend. He had his moments.

John Denver died was tragically killed on October 12,1997 at the age of 53 when his experimental plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Pacific Grove, California while making a series of touch-and-go landings at the nearby Monterey Peninsula Airport.

A couple John Denver stories. A friend of mine worked security at one of those outdoor summer sheds where they have concerts. John Denver played there. That day before the show Denver went out for a run. When he came back the guy who was at the gate wouldn’t let John Denver back in because he didn’t have any identification and he didn’t recognize Denver. My friend came over and told the fellow that it was in fact John Denver. John Denver wasn’t upset by this he found it funny.

Years ago I played in Dead Pools- where you pick famous celebrities who you thought would die that year. I played games on the internet mainly but for a few years had a Dead Pool with just friends. We would get together before the start of a New Year and have a draft. My sister-in-law’s boyfriend at the time played in the 1997 game. He came and within a half hour had drank a six pack. He took early in the draft John Denver which had everyone howling. {the idea was to take either sick celebrities or very old celebrities-who would take John Denver who was only 53 and in good health?} Anyhow-when I heard the news on the radio that John Denver had died the first thing that flashed into my mind was- T.J. had taken him in the draft and we thought he was an idiot when he took him. {Mrs. Postcard one year took Sonny Bono-who also didn’t seem like that great of a pick until he went on that skiing trip}
