President LIncoln Signs Act That Admits West Virginia To The Union- This Day 1862

On this day in 1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed an act that admitted the state of West Virginia to the Union. West Virginia would officially become a state on June 20th, 1863. What became West Virginia had been a part of the state of Virginia. The American Civil War ended up dividing Virginia in two. West Virginia would become the 35th state.
