Willie Mays Makes “The Catch” On This Day 1954 World Series/ Link To Video Of “The Catch”

On this day in 1954 Willie Mays makes probably the most famous catch in baseball history. His amazing over-the-shoulder catch robbed Vic Wertz of the Indians of an extra base hit. The thing that is forgotten about on this play is how far Vic Wertz hit that ball. New York’s Polo Grounds was huge. Wertz hit the ball 450 feet. The center field wall at the Polo Grounds was 483 feet from home plate. We will never see a ballpark like that one again. No one ever hit a ball over the 483 mark in center field at the Polo Grounds.

    • When I was young and went to games at old Forbes Field I thought it was strange that after batting practice that they would wheel the batting cage out to center against the wall…after a few games I realized.why not- no one is ever going to hit the ball out there… some of those old ballparks were massive..
