1928 Amsterdam Games- Johnny Weissmuller “Tarzan”

At the 1928 Amsterdam Games two great champions finished their Olympic careers {Although Paavo Nurmi didn’t realize it at the time} Nurmi and Weissmuller stars in the 1924 Paris Games.

Johnny Weissmuller  won 2 gold medals in 1928 in the 100 meter freestyle and the 4X2oo meter relay. Weissmuller was the Michael Phelps of his day. He won 52 United States Championships and set 67 World Records during his time. He would end up with 5 gold medals and 1 bronze in his great olympic career. One of the greatest swimmers in American Olympic history.

He would go on to play Tarzan in the Tarzan movies. He would star in 12 movies and would be the most famous Tarzan. He is also one of the people  featured on the cover of the most famous album of all time- The Beatles “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band”

My favorite Weissmuller story is this one- in 1958 he was golfing at a celebrity golf tournament in Cuba when a group of rebel soldiers seized his golf cart. Weissmuller gave out his famous Tarzan yell and the shocked soldiers started jumping up and down and yelled “Tarzan Welcome to Cuba” Weissmuller and his friends were not kidnapped by the soldiers but given an escort of the golf course.

Johnny Weissmuller died at the age of 79 in 1984.
