Woody Guthrie 100 years old today

The great folk singer and song writer Woody Guthrie was born 100 years ago today. He died in 1967 at age 55 of Huntington’s disease. Woody influenced generations of musicians- most notably Bob Dylan. He has also influenced the likes of Joe Strummer, John Mellencamp,  Jeff Tweety, Bruce Springsteen.. the list goes on and on. His son Arlo is still an active performer.

I have always thought that “This Land Is Your Land” would make a great National Anthem. {Neil Young covers that song- Woody’s most famous song on his new album} If I were to recommend one album of Woody’s to listen to I’d say “Dust Bowl Ballads” is his best. A great biography of Woody came out 30 some years ago- one of my favorite biographies I’ve ever read- Joe Klein’s “Woody Guthrie: A Life” An excellent movie on Woody’s life was done in 1976 with David Carradine starring as Woody in “Bound For Glory”
