This Date In Baseball History- December 22, 1962- An important date in the history of the Houston Colt .45’s- voters in Harris County, Texas voted to approve a bond issue to complete the financing of an all-weather stadium to house the baseball club.

The Houston Astrodome would open to much fanfare in 1965- the first multi-sport domed stadium in the world. It was nicknamed ‘The Eighth Wonder Of The World.’ The Colt .45’s- would have a brand new name going into the Astrodome- the Houston Astros. The Astros would play their home games at the Astrodome from 1965-1999. I attended one game at The Astrodome. It was like watching baseball in a big movie theater. One big plus- the day my brother and I were in Houston it was in the high 90’s- and very humid. It was nice going indoors to an air-conditioned environment.

  1. It had to be pretty cool when it was opened….if it didn’t have turf it would have been much better. They did try I believe….that place was a haven for long flies.

  2. Congrats to you on your guy, Ben, conquering my Cleveland Browns for so many years He deserves my respect. Hopefully both of our teams will find new qbs to seize competitive advantage in the AFC North. Happy New Year. USFMAN
