This Date In Baseball History- The Yankees hire their former shortstop Phil Rizzuto as their new radio-television announcer. Rizzuto would remain on the job for forty years retiring in 1996. Phil Rizzuto died in 2007 at the age of 89.

  1. There was a story about Phil’s broadcast partner looking at Phil’s scorecard and seeing the symbol “WW” in one or the blocks. He asked Phil what it was, and Phil said “wasn’t watching.”

    • Yes!- Meatloaf’s controversial hit. .. When I think of that song I remember listening to American Top 40 on the local station- and they went from #40 to #38 skipping #39. A few days later at the newsstand I had to look over the copy of Billboard to see what they skipped over. It was ‘Paradise By The Dashboard Light’- which didn’t stay in the Top 40 for long as it turned out. ‘The Scooter’ was the play by play man.

    • We carried Rick Dees’ Weekly Top 40 on our station. That’s where I first heard and enjoyed the song. I thought it was cool to have a baseball figure included in the tune.
