100 Great Songs From The British Invasion: Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying’- Gerry And The Pacemakers. In the UK Gerry and The Pacemakers had 3 #1 hits and a #2 before in early 1964 releasing ‘Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying’- but in the US ‘Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying’ was their first hit- as they rode the backs of The Beatles- it went to #4. After the song had been written it was given to Louise Cordet who recorded it in early 1964- before Gerry and The Pacemakers decided to record it themselves. The band would perform it on The Ed Sullivan Show on May 3, 1964. They would have seven Top 40 hits in the US- but ‘Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying’ would be their biggest hit. It was produced by George Martin.

fine song that seems largely forgotten… I honestly wouldn’t have known who did it if I was asked out of the blue, but I know the song.
Their best record. Every garage band in the world had to learn that one.
From that point in time, that year or so that anything Liverpudlian had a decent chance of getting a spin.
a lot of Liverpool bands owed a lot to The Beatles- not that they didn’t have talent- but would they have been heard in America without The Beatles?
I don’t think so, but the many Brit bands that came after sure did owe the Beatles a debt.
