100 Great Songs From The British Invasion: Over Under Sideways Down- The Yardbirds. The Yardbirds were inspired by Bill Haley and His Comets classic ‘Rock Around The Clock’ in coming up with Over Under Sideways Down. After a show the band heard the song and guitarist Jeff Beck started playing the songs bassline- and the rest of the band joined in and they soon had an arrangement. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it at #23 in their 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time list. This would be the next to last Yardbirds hit in the US- and their final UK hit. Drummer Jim McCarty claimed that “Over under sideways down, That’s the best way I have found” was changed to “Over under sideways down, Backwards forwards square and round”, because BBC censors might have objected to the vaguely suggestive line.
