2021 Song Draft- Round 10 Pick 10- Cincinnati Babyhead selects- ‘[Sittin’ On] The Dock Of The Bay’- Otis Redding.
Hearing ‘Dock of the Bay’ is like seeing an old friend. Feels good.
Cincinnati Babyhead loved it the first time he heard it and he loves it more today. Better every time he hears it and he’s heard it a lot.
Otis’ voice is the best. What can you say.
“Looks like nothing’s gonna change, everything still remains the same, I can’t do what ten people tell me to do, so I guess I’ll remain the same”, yes.
When he sings that verse CB is gonesville and then he finishes the song whistling. Too much!
Perfection!!
If Babyhead ever runs into a Genie, one wish will be “To sing like Otis Redding”.
“I’m sittin’ on the dock of the bay wastin’ time…”
Otis, CB loves ya!
(Thanks Hans for putting this together and thanks to everyone for sharing their love of music. Later. CB)
One of the greatest songs of all time by one of the greatest voices of all time.
No argument here Liam. Especially on the “greatest voices”.
This is one I don’t get tired of either…it’s always fresh. It’s a lot of fun to play also. Great way to close it out CB…when you meet the Genie…asked him or her for me to play like John Entwistle… if you have some wishes to spare.
I’ll do that and we can start a band. How about ‘The Two’ for a name ?
That works! Or Those Two lol…
I have one more wish. Maybe a sax player?
A sax player that plays drums also.
Absolutely. Our first gig is at a strip joint. I’ll stop now.
I have the dollar bills.
LOL!
OMG. LOL!
I said I was stopping but your comment made me laugh and sucked me back in. Do you play the sax and drums?
I played flute in 6th grade and always wanted to be a drummer. Does that count?
Close enough, you can slide over to the honkin sax.
Right on!
Looks like Vic has beat me to it lol
Huh?
Being in CBS and Max’s band 😀
Hey. There’s room for more. 😊😉
Gina Schock and Debbi Peterson are my heros.
I also wanted to be a bassist after seeing Suzi Quatro on Happy Days.
I played sax in high school and always wanted to play drums.
Those Three!
Paul you’re in. It’s a 4 wish Genie.
A timeless tune- Otis’s tragic death a great loss. This was on my shortlist too CB. Wonderful pick.
It just kept coming at me so I had to pull the trigger on it
Outstanding choice. One of those songs I somehow infused as a child and liked right away and , like you say, still think is a classic.
I could have over thought some of my picks. Not this one. It picked me.
Yes, gotta agree. One listen and you’re hooked. Many tried to cover this great song, but Otis always does prevail. You can’t top perfection.
I could have used your comment and saved my self some words on the take.
Awesome pick CB. As others have already stated, this is one of the greatest songs of all time. Every time I hear it, I’m taken back to a lighthearted moment that occurred in my 8th grade music class, shortly after Otis’ tragic death. During a particularly boring lesson on some arcane music none of us cared about, a kid in the class yelled out “bring back Otis Redding!” Everyone laughed, including the teacher.
What a cool memory. I might steal that one. Otis pretty well trumps most music for me. “Arcane” I can imagine. Good stuff. Put a smile on my face.
Dude. Great song. Everytime I hear it, I think of Top Gun.
Vic, you have a lot of film/music connections. Amazing how that works and stays with us.
Music has always transported me to memories or places.
It moves ya Vic. Like us all I guess. This tune does it big time. Ever see Steve Cropper talk about Otis? He chokes up.
I am unfamiliar with Steve Cropper.
He was there with Otis from the beginning. Guitarist for Booker T & MG’s. He also wrote . Otis and him wrote this song together. Ever get a chance watch the doc on Stax Records. It will give you some great music history. If you google this song it will probably give you everything you need to know on the cut.
Thanks!
Great pick. How did we come so close to the draft ending without this song in it? You came through in the nick of time. 🙂
Whew! That was close!
Great pick, CB, absolutely love that song! Such a shame we lost Otis Redding so early – yet another music artist who perished in a plane crash!
It’s also crazy that “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was released after Redding’s death and became his only no. 1 hit in the U.S.
The Otis story is very interesting to me. So much in it. He never played second fiddle to anyone. Plus his music along with the Stax guys was so good.
Couldn’t agree more regarding Stax – a true treasure trove! It was Motown that made me love soul initially. Then I discovered Stax…
Something about Stax that does it for me. I think we have discussed this before.
I don’t like how it’s the only Redding song I ever hear on the radio – he has other good ones too.
Yes he does. I know i am probably in the minority but I love his ‘Respect’
It’s very good but still blown away by Ms Franklin’s version.
Like i said Id be in the minority on that one. Talking real close for me though. Off to listen to some Otis. Maybe start with ‘Ive Been Loving You to Long’ Aph. That kinda came out awkward but Ill stick with it.
You only love me for my blog.
Yup
Great CB! Can’t add anything to all that’s been said already. Classic song that you love from the first time you hear it
You just added the cherry.
Superb choice, CB. The heart, the soul, the being-in-the-moment of it makes this a stellar tune.
