#25: ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’- The Beatles established themselves as superstars in the UK in 1963- but in the United States they were just a rumor in 1963. ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ would become the first Beatles #1 hit in the US- as the US started to then play catch up on what they had missed the year before. The single would become The Beatles best-selling single worldwide- selling 12 million copies. John and Paul wrote this song together after Paul had moved in with the Asher family in London. In 1980 John would describe how they wrote ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ and other songs during the early years.

We wrote a lot of stuff together, one on one, eyeball to eyeball. Like in ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand,’ I remember when we got the chord that made the song. We were in Jane Asher’s house, downstairs in the cellar playing on the piano at the same time. And we had, ‘Oh you-u-u/ got that something …’ And Paul hits this chord and I turn to him and say, ‘That’s it!’ I said, ‘Do that again!’ In those days, we really used to absolutely write like that—both playing into each other’s noses.
