100 Great Songs From The British Invasion: 1963-1966: Game Of Love- Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders. Born Glyn Geoffrey Ellis in Manchester, England in 1945- he changed his name to Wayne Fontana- the last name coming from Elvis Presley’s drummer D.J. Fontana. Fontana and his back up band The Mindbenders formed in 1963 and were signed by- Fontana Records. While they had 5 Top 40 hits in the UK- ‘The Game Of Love” was the only Top 40 hit they would have in the US- but it was a big one- going all the way to #1 in 1965. After several less successful singles- Fontana left the group and went solo- he had 3 solo Top 40 hits in the UK. Wayne Fontana died last year of cancer at the age of 74.

They/he had a few nice hits, ‘Pamela, Pamela’ and ‘A Groovy Kind Of Love.’ They seemed to have an obvious englishness to their sound, but it’s not an affectation.
The Mindbenders, minus Fontana were in the movie, To Sir With Love. They were the 3 piece band backing LuLu when she sang the song for Sir Sidney. I always liked their sound, very English.
Didn’t know they were in the movie- I only knew them from this song.
This tune was an earworm in my head more than a few times. 🙂
