Alannah Myles- close to being a one -hit wonder. She had 2- the follow up to this #1- ‘Love Is’- Peaked at #36. ‘Black Velvet’ is a tribute to Elvis Presley. It won Alannah Myles a Grammy for Rock Female Vocal.
It was a good song that was played to death. She had a great voice.

God, was it ever played to death! I loved it at first, but eventually grew so tired of it.

She remained big in Canada for much of the 90s with several more hit singles (mix of heavy metal lite and power ballads) but few were terribly memorable. Chris Ward who wrote most of it was her boyfriend at the time and had a couple of hits himself in the 70s in Canada; he was a TV VJ at the time he wrote this one.
