#44: ‘All You Need Is Love: Written by John Lennon- ‘All You Need Is Love’ was first released as a single in July 1967. It was Britain’s contribution to a television program Our World -which was the first global television link. The Beatles had agreed to do the Our World program in late May 1967 and the idea at first was to use Paul McCartney’s ‘Your Mother Should Know’- -how lame a contribution that would have been to such an event. There is a difference of opinion on whether ‘All You Need Is Love’ was written specifically for the Our World broadcast or not- even among The Beatles- but either way they couldn’t have come up with a better song- to broadcast around the world- and especially for the time- the Summer of Love- 1967.

  1. great song , and another which benefitted from George Martin’s classical prowess. By the way, I highly recommend the show ‘McCartney 321″ for any Beatles fan… Rick Rubin sits down (and dances around) with Paul in a studio, talking about the beatles and life thereafter.

  2. I wonder how many Beatles titles, phrases, etc. have entered into the English lexicon? I personally use several of them. This is one. “Imagine,” and “Whatever gets you through the night.” are a couple more.

  3. I love this song. But something that will always stick in my mind, unfortunately, was the time I heard it played during intermission at a CCR concert in 1971, when I was only 17. While walking past rows of seats on my way to the restroom, I heard someone yell “Fuck the Beatles!” Pretty tacky.
