Milli Vanilli- 30 years later still draws a laugh. The pop duo formed in Germany- had a very brief run- a spectacular run chart wise- 5 hits- all making the Top 4 in the Billboard Hot 100- 3 going to #1- this was the first #1. Of course it was garbage- even before it was revealed it was a fraud band. The duo- Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan it turns out didn’t even sing on their records. They had won a Grammy for Best New Artist- which would be taken away from them after the scandal was revealed. Rob Pilatus would die of a drug overdose in 1998 at the age of 32. Note- The b-side’ Too Much Monkey Business’ is not the Chuck Berry classic.
Pretty fraudulent duo.To be fair, they’re fantastic lip-sync artists though.
yes they fooled some people for a while…
Still, it’s sad Pilatus succumbed; wether to the pressure of being found out or the temptations of the R’n’R lifestyle. When you are in the front, in the spotlight and they find your flaws it seems it’s hard to hide.
that indeed is the sad part of the whole thing his dying.
I hated their songs, whether they sang them or not, and was disgusted and in continual disbelief that several went to #1.
1989 was not a banner year for authentic artists- at the top of the charts.
No, it sure wasn’t.
You know, I am aware of the controversy but, I can’t recall ever hearing any of their music. I guess I had already switched to Classic Rock & Alt Rock stations. Even Oldies stations still existed.
