Aretha Franklin - "Spanish Harlem" | Songs | Crownnote

Billboard Top 40 Hits 1971: #145: ‘Spanish Harlem’- Aretha Franklin. July 31, 1971.

  • Single: ‘Spanish Harlem’- Aretha Franklin
  • Record Company- Atlantic
  • Genre: Soul
  • Written by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector
  • Time: 3:30
  • B-side: ‘Lean On Me’
  • Album- Greatest Hits
  • Grade: A
  • Peaked at #2 12 weeks in Billboard Hot 100.

1971 was a big year for Aretha Franklin- 4 Top 40 hits with 3 making the Top 10- this was her biggest hit on the year- just falling short of the #1 spot. A remake of the Ben E. King smash from 1960. As good as Aretha’s version is- my go to is still Ben E. King’s original.

  1. This one I like a lot! My opinion might irritate many, but to me Aretha had a great voice, no question, but didn’t record that many great records. This one though is really catchy.
