Musically the first thing I think of when I think of 1987-88 is U2- and ‘The Joshua Tree.’ One of my favorite albums of all time- a great album which was also immensely popular. I am often wrong on predictions- but in the mid 80’s in following the career of U2- I just sensed that after The Unforgettable Fire in 1984- that U2 was going to explode with their next album. This was an album that I loved at first listen. ‘With Or Without You’ was the first single from the album -the second single “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’- also went to #1- their only 2 #1’s. Of course when you sell 25 million albums and your tour is one of the biggest of the era- and you are everywhere- there is going to be a backlash. My friend Helmet was even a bigger fan than I was- in fact he is the one who turned me on to U2- he loved U2 and Bruce Springsteen. He’s had nothing to do with either artist since U2- and The Joshua Tree and Springsteen with Born In The USA- its like when they became big he was turned off.
Heard it a lot but still sounds good. Lots of emotion like most of their songs.
I’m with you Hans – this album was part of the soundtrack of my life at the time. The first time I heard this song on radio I fell in love with it and went out a d got the CD and that was it !
“With or Without You” is my favorite U2 song, and yes, “Joshua Tree” is a masterpiece.
