2021 Song Draft- Round 1 Pick 6- Cincinnati Babyhead selects- ‘Gloria’- Them.
Cincinnati Babyhead’s blog can be found at – https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/38632989
Basically stick a pin in my music pile and something good will come up.
Here’s one of the coolest songs ever! The reason Babyhead loves rock n roll. Songs like this.
The song wastes no time, gets to it. It all works. Van’s feeling it and he makes you feel it. The beat catches you and you’re gone. Do they still make music like this? Tell me I need to know (A good song by Petty and the Heartbreakers).
Slap it on and hit the repeat button and catch the groove. It doesn’t get any better.
Rock n roll the way it was supposed to be.
What’s her name CB?
“And her name is G-L-O-R-IIIIIIII…..”
Van Morrison is one of my favorites- and well- ‘Gloria’ is one of those rock and roll staples. At one point I figure every playing rock band had to know this classic. Great selection.
I wasnt even in a band and I could belt it out. One of those songs that if you were in a bar and it started to play you would grab the closest person to you and start going nuts.
This is one of the first songs I learned on guitar and played in bars…one of the best garage songs there is…and a good one to call girls on the stage to sing the chorus with…when you are 16-17 that is a big deal. You can stretch that middle out forever.
Great song CB
For sure Max. First time I seen Springsteen he did this cut and just nailed it. I can still se and hear it. Bar song supreme. Gets everyone in the mood. What ever that mood is?
It turns the spectators into the rock singers they want to be…and they love it. Springsteen always does covers justice.
I think Bruce went into She’s The One” after or before.
Definitely would be a good one to get a bar crowd going! I’m not a very big Van the Man fan, but I like some of his work… this one is good but seems such an outlier compared to “Moondance” or “Into the Mystic”. I guess it’s surprising he could really rock!
All this early Them has more of an edge. I still go back to it often. “Baby Please Dont Go’, ‘Mystic Eyes’ etc. More bluesy/rock. Im a fan of all his styles.
He sings like Jagger here but puts the amplification on 11 (or whatever that expression is.) I could see a crowd getting ramped up with this song. Good choice, CB!
Van, Eric Burdon, Jagger were all into this style early. The Animals and Them had an edge that I dug and still do.
I like that kind of styling also. I loved Eric Burdon with War with Spill the Wine. He had a voice and they had the groove.
Eric stayed true to that style and you can find lots of good recordings he did later.
This is a great one for transporting me to a place and time. Your description and praise for the song is nice and succinct but yet thorough.
Thanks. I get “transported” every time I listen to it.
Awesome choice CB! I think Little Steven on his Underground Garage radio show called this the archetype garage rock song and I think that’s true. Great write up.
I think Steve would dig it big time. ‘Write Up” short and sweet like the song. Well maybe the song isnt so sweet but it greasy good.
A very CB pick. Van Morrison is super young and already looks grumpy.
That comment made me chuckle. Especially the second part.
Great song!
Common ground
Often copied, never reached. A real rock classic from the 60s.
Yup! I like your style.
Oh, my! I’ve never heard this version. I was used to The Shadows of Knight version. This tempo is faster. Interesting! Great song, tho…
I have never heard the Knight version that I know of. I will check out for sure. Lots of covers . Patti Smith and the Doors come to mind.
Oh, yeah…
