Hans Hot 100 Beatles Songs: #86: ‘I Want You [She’s So Heavy]’ –

“I Want You [She’s So Heavy]- a Lennon-McCartney song- written by John Lennon is the closer on side 1 of Abbey Road. Only three songs from Abbey Road fail to crack Hans Hot 100- and those three are all on side 1 back-to-back-to back- “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’, ‘Oh Darling” and “Octopus’s Garden.’ I must admit as a young Hans when I first caught Beatlemania this was one of my least favorite Beatles songs. When I listened to Abbey Road I endured the song at the end of side 1 because even then I didn’t skip tracks but I didn’t care for it. Over the years it has grown on me. The song is unique in The Beatles catalog. It clocks in at nearly 8 minutes, the lyrics in his long song- are very minimal. This song John wrote about Yoko- was also the first song started for Abbey Road and the last one finished. In fact the last time all four Beatles were together in a recording studio was to finish up ‘I Want You [She’s So Heavy] on August 20, 1969. Some have credited ‘I Want You [She’s So Heavy] as one of the first metal songs.
