Finally- it seems like I’ve been forever counting down the #1 hits from 1986- actually a month since there were 30 #1 hits in the year. This single hit #1 at the end of the year 1986 and carried over into 1987- and was Billboard’s #1 chart single for the year of 1987. It was The Bangles first #1. The song was written back in 1984 by Liam Sternberg. It was offered to Toni Basil who turned it down. Lene Lovich recorded it but it went unreleased when she decided to leave music to raise a family. The whistling in the song- done by machine. The song was banned by the Nazis at Clear Channel after 9.11.

  1. always liked the song but never loved it… got a bit tedious for awhile since it was so overplayed. Seems to me the Bangles had the talent, and the looks too (perfect for the MTV decade), but didn’t always get great material to record. That was more Columbia’s doing than theirs…but that said, they were selling in the millions so I guess the record company knew what it was doing.

  2. Always enjoyed this song. Hey maybe it’s my reader but what happened to #1 hit #616 – I see Cetera at 615 and then the Bangles at 617.
